Marianne Roussety

We interview Byron Bay based artist Marianne Roussety to discuss her handmade ceramics and original artworks.

Your paintings and ceramics are beautiful. When did you start working in these mediums?

Thank you so much ! I started painting about 7 years ago in my hometown, Quebec in Canada, and I learned the art of clay 3 years ago in Byron Bay.

How many paintings sit under one Original Artwork series?

It really depends, in the past I have had 8-10 pieces under one series and another only 4! I try not to push when I run out of inspiration :)

What process do you go through to create Original Artwork?

I am actually having a big and needed break from painting at the moment, and it's so good, I really needed this break to feel the love and pure inspiration to paint again. However, I normally come up with a bit of a concept, especially if the artwork is part of a series, choose the colour palette, play some funky tunes and start the painting process. Sometimes it can take days to a couple of weeks to finish a painting.

As an artist now living in Byron Bay, how does the region influence your work?

The land on which I live and create on, Bundjalung country, is so abundant, from the ocean to the lush rainforests to the beautiful hills, inspiration is everywhere. I think living so close to nature sparks more creativity in my life!

You are also a model. How do you balance art with business?

At the moment I am trying to prioritise my art, as it's ultimately what I wish to do in the future, but in saying that, it's great to have modelling jobs on the side. I like to choose who I work for and I make sure that the brand's values align with mine.

Which brands do you like to work with and why?

As mentioned before, I like to work for brands who care for people and the environment, it's super important for me to see that these brands want to make a positive change in the fashion industry.

Describe your typical day?

My typical day changes from week to week depending on what projects I have on, but I normally have breakkie at home, go for a walk and get my morning coffee at my local coffee shop, come home and work on my ceramics, or go to the beach. I go to pilates twice a week and love going for walks either on the beach or in my neighbourhood.

Which thought leaders / creatives inspire you?

Really into Dr. Nicole LePera's (The Holistic Psychologist) knowledge and insights, her insights have helped me a lot to deal with some old traumas in the past few years. She's amazing! A few artists I find inspiring, Jai Vasicek, Paul Gauguin, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Henri Matisse.. the list is long haha!
