Interview With Ceramic Artist Bianca Pintan

kafandco interview with Mum and artist Bianca Pintan. The aesthetic of Bianca's handmade ceramics pieces is simple, elegant and organic. For like-minded people who adore the beauty of the imperfect.

When did you start working with ceramics?

I started working with ceramics when I moved to Byron Bay in 2017. It was love at first touch - I felt deeply connected to clay.

How did growing up in Brazil influence your art?

I had the privilege of growing up in the country side of Brazil. During my childhood I lived on a farm that allowed me to have incredible experiences and develop a true connection with Mother Earth.

As a new mum, how do you balance business and family?

I’m fortunate to share the journey with a very present Dad, who gives me time to be fully present in the studio. I also surrender during my daily exercise, reminding myself that my best changes every day and all I need to do is what I have time to do.

Which thought leaders / creatives inspire you?

I recently had the pleasure of getting to know Treana Peake, founder of Obakki. She makes a difference in the world through her design and creativity by committing her business model to philanthropic solutions that change people’s lives. It’s very inspiring to witness her commitment to create sustainable change through slow design.

Describe the process involved when creating a new piece?

It usually starts with the intention of creating something new, beautiful and exciting. There’s a state of flow that takes place when I have my hands on a new creation - the clay often takes me on a path and I just let it manifest into reality. It’s a magical process!

When creating a new piece I need to refine design and detail while respecting the clay body as it loses moisture - ceramic art is a great patience builder.

The textures of the vases are beautiful. What tools and materials do you use to achieve this?

I only use different tones of clay, mostly from recycling what was removed from previous pieces. In terms of tools I use very simple ones including a sea sponge, wire, knife, metal, silicone rib, a table wheel and a mirror.

What is your long term vision for the business?

I’d like the business to continue on it’s current path and operate at a higher frequency. I see the business connecting me with inspiring people and allowing me to work in exquisite places around the world, bringing as much presence and joy to those who admire it as it does for me when making the work.

Some wisdom for aspiring artists out there?

Trust yourself and connect with your inner wisdom to guide you through your art journey. Whenever it feels like it’s not happening just give yourself a break. When the creativity starts, let it flow. It’s all about going with the flow!
